Why is my icemaker so loud?

An icemaker can be a great appliance in the home, helping cool down drinks in summer or providing “rocks” for that perfect evening dinner drink.

But over the years C&W Appliance has heard from customers who complain that their icemaker is too loud.

Unfortunately sometimes this can be the sign of a mechanical fault.  Other times, adjustments can be made to mitigate any noise from these machines.

We’ll share some tips and tricks of how we educate our customers and how to get the most out of their icemaker – while not having to hear it all the time!

Possible mechanical problems for loud icemakers

There are a few different mechanical problems that could cause your icemaker to be loud:

  1. The icemaker may not be level. If it’s not level, it can vibrate and make more noise. You can adjust the legs on the bottom of the icemaker to level it.
  2. The icemaker may be dirty. Over time, ice and frost can build up in the icemaker, which can cause it to vibrate and make noise. You can clean the icemaker by removing the ice tray and using a soft brush or cloth to remove any ice or frost that has built up.
  3. The icemaker may be old or damaged. If your icemaker is old or has been damaged in some way, it may be making more noise than it normally would. In this case, it’s best to have a professional check the icemaker to determine the cause of the noise and make any necessary repairs.
  4. The icemaker may be too cold. If your icemaker is located in a particularly cold area, such as a garage or basement, the ice and frost can cause the icemaker to vibrate and make noise. You can try insulating the icemaker with foam or rubber to reduce the vibration and noise.

Some practical tips to reduce the icemaker noise

There are a few things you can try to make your icemaker quieter:

  1. Make sure the icemaker is level. If it’s not level, it can vibrate and make more noise. You can adjust the legs on the bottom of the icemaker to level it.
  2. Clean the icemaker. Over time, ice and frost can build up in the icemaker, which can cause it to vibrate and make noise. You can clean the icemaker by removing the ice tray.  Use a soft brush or cloth to remove any ice or frost that has built up.
  3. Insulate the icemaker. If your icemaker is located in a particularly cold area, such as a garage or basement, the ice and frost can cause the icemaker to vibrate and make noise. You can try insulating the icemaker.  Use foam or rubber to reduce the vibration and noise.
  4. Have a professional check the icemaker. If none of these steps work, there may be a problem with the icemaker itself. In this case, it’s best to have a professional check the icemaker to determine the cause of the noise and make any necessary repairs.
