How to Maintain Your Kitchen Appliances

Sub-Zero-Wolf-Kitchen-300x139Once a kitchen appliance is purchased and installed, most of us don’t consider regular maintenance needs until something breaks. Try these simple DIY maintenance tips to help keep your kitchen appliances working properly.

OVEN & RANGE

Gone are the days of spraying the chemical-laden smells of E-Z Off to clean the oven.  Today, we can simply turn our ovens to the self-cleaning setting and let the baked-on grime bake its self off.  One of the most important things to remember:  Don’t run the self-cleaning setting close to a big event, like a large dinner or gathering.  Because the heat reaches such an intense level, many ovens will “fail” during a self-cleaning cycle.  If this happens, check the manufacturer’s manual and call C&W Appliance Service.

On your cooktop range, be sure to keep the reflector bowls clean.  Not only does it look better, but a clean reflector bowl cooks more efficiently and keeps food drippings away from the burner.

REFRIGERATOR

About once a month, unplug the refrigerator, and using a vacuum cleaner attachment, remove dust and dirt from the coils. Dirty coils can hinder how well your refrigerator works.  By cleaning the coils, your refrigerator will run more efficiently and use less energy.

DISHWASHER

Even stainless steel dishwashers can have an odor about them.  To eliminate build up and odors, run the dishwasher through a full cycle, but empty.  Instead of soap, use a cup of white vinegar.  The vinegar is a natural cleaning agent that will leave the dishwasher smelling fresh and clean again.

Always avoid including non-dishwasher safe items in the wash cycle.  If you’re not sure if a dish, pot or bowl is dishwasher safe, choice to wash it by hand instead.

GARBAGE DISPOSAL

The garbage disposal was never meant to dispose of all food.  To avoid clogging, never use the disposal for grease, potatoes, carrots, rice, pasta, egg shells, coffee grounds, nuts, seeds or bones.  If you have just thrown the burnt rice in the disposal and flipped the switch, only to find water backing up in your sink, immediately contact C&W Appliance Repair.

To keep the garbage disposal smelling fresh, place a handful of ice cubes in the disposal with some fresh smelling citrus peels like lemon, orange or lime.  Run the disposal with cold water for about 15 to 30 seconds.  Then continue to rinse with cold water.  The combination of the ice and the citrus will keep the garbage disposal smelling fresh.
